Government Of India blocks 32 websites for hosting ISIS content

DOT has issued a notice to the ISP in India to block 32 websites including Vimeo, Dailymotion, Weebly and Github. The websites were blocked because they were carrying “anti-India” content from ISIL (a.k.a. Islamic State or ISIS).  No statements was issued by the Indian government to the public informing them of the ban until the circular was leaked.

The blocked websites were containing material about Areeb Majid, an alleged ISIS member who was arrested by NIA, and three others who were from North Karnataka's Bhatkal area. The websites were being used to induce Indian youths to join ISIS for spreading news about death of certain persons while fighting Allied Forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Arvind Gupta, the national head of Indian political party BJP announced on twitter that "The websites that have been blocked were based on an advisory by Anti Terrorism Squad, and were carrying Anti India content from ISIS."

Gupta also tweeted that those sites which remove the objectionalble content in question will be unblocked.

Four websites—Weebly, Vimeo, Dailymotion and Github—are unblocked now. The fate of the rest 28 remains unclear at the moment.
