Corning Unveils New Super Scratch-Resistant 'Project Phire' Glass
Makers of popular Gorilla Glass displays, Corning unveiled its latest glass dubbed 'Project Phire'. The latest glass will combine Gorilla features with sapphire protection which will improve protection against cover glass damage during device drops. It will be more stronger and super scratch resistant.
Corning announced the 'Project Phire' at an investor meeting by Corning Glass president James Clappin. He said that the new product offers Superior scratch-resistance along with damage resistance and drop performance of a Corning Gorilla Glass 4.
James Clappin, president of Corning Glass Technologies said - "We told you last year that sapphire was great for scratch performance but didn’t fare well when dropped. So, we created a product that offers the same superior damage resistance and drop performance of Gorilla Glass 4 with scratch resistance that approaches sapphire.”
Corning's Gorilla Glass is used by 33 brands and is used in over 3 billion devices, including the latest iPhones.
The Project Phire is claimed to be the toughest in the industry. Several tests were done by Corning's top scientists and it withstood drops conducted on hard and rough surfaces upto 2X, better than competitive glass designs. It has been manufactured by Corning's proprietary fusion draw process resulting to thinner and more durable glass while maintaining clarity.
Even though Gorilla Glass is hard to break, it scratches easier than sapphire, but with Project Phire, the company shows how important scratch resistance is going to be.
Corning will make Project Phire glass available to manufacturers later this year.
