Micromax Become The Number One Smartphone Seller In India, Beats Samsung for Top Spot
According to research firm Canalys, Micromax has taken the top spot in India's smartphone market for the first time in the fourth quarter replacing Samsung. Micromax has been the second largest smartphone seller in India for quite a while.
The report says that 21.6 million smartphones were sold in India in the fourth quarter, out of these Micromax accounted for 22 percent of smartphone sales in the country, ahead of Samsung's 20 percent.
Micromax and Samsung were followed by two other budget smartphone manufacturer Karbonn and Lava in third and fourth place respectively.
The report also states that about 25 percent of the smartphones sold in India were priced under $1000 (Rs. 6000) and 41 percent of smartphones were sold in the $100-$200 (Rs. 6000 to Rs. 12,000) price range.
India has the world's second -highest number of mobile phone users after China, it is the third biggest market by number of smartphone sold. Majority of the sale are of Low priced smartphones.
Micromax's incredible performance is due its continuing appeal to mobile phone users upgrading to smartphone. Its flagship line of devices has effectively targeted Rs. 9,000 to Rs. 12,000 market segment. The company has also been quicker than its competitors to improve the appeal of devices and sells its handset at a lower price point that appeal to the mid-level income market in India.
Over the last few quarters, Samsung has lost its market share in India to domestic manufaturers like Micromax, Lava, Karbon and global rival likes Motorola, Xiaomi and Asus.
Globally, Samsung has been facing tough competition for the like of Apple and Xiaomi. Its market share in the smartphone market have declined in the past few years.
