Google rolls out Android 5.1 Lollipop update to compatible devices

Google has officially announced the roll out of the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for compatible devices. The new update brings stability and performance improvements and offers new features. This is the first major update to Lollipop since it made its debut in November 2014.

New features include support for multiple SIM card, HD voice calling and Device protection. The multiple-SIM card feature allows users to use more than one SIM card on a device and can set different colours for contacts associated with each SIM.

HD Voice calling as the name suggests allows voice calling on the mobile phone. The HD voice calling will be only compatible with Android 5.1 devices. 

The Device Protection feature locks your device when lost or stolen until you sign in with your Google account even if the phone has been reset to factory settings. This feature will be available on most Android phones and tablets shipped with Android 5.1 in addition to Nexus 6 and Nexus 9.

Other new features include ability to join Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth paired device option directly available from Quick Settings, new animations in the clock app and many more.

Soon after announcing the Android 5.1 update, Google started pushing Android 5.1 factory images for some of the nexus devices that include Nexus 5, Nexus 7 2012 and Nexus 10. More devices will follow in the coming days.
