Windows 10 will be a free upgrade, even for users with pirated software copies
Microsoft plans in making Windows 10 available to 190 countries in 111 languages this summer (between June and August). What's new?
Microsoft's Terry Myerson announced that Windows 10 will be available for free to Windows 8 and Windows 7 users, even if they are running pirated version of the operating system. In simple words if you have an unlicensed copy of Windows 7/8 running in your system you will be able to upgrade to licensed copy of Windows 10.
"We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," he told Reuters in a telephonic interview.
This move is targeted at the Chinese market, where two-thirds of all the Windows-based PCs are running on pirated copy of Windows.
At the time of announcement it was not clear whether the free upgrade will be limited to China or not. But in a statement issued to The Verge, Microsoft explained that "[a]nyone with a qualified device can upgrade to Windows 10, including those with pirated copies of Windows. We believe customers over time will realize the value of properly licensing Windows and we will make it easy for them to move to legitimate copies."
So there you have it, everyone is eligible to upgrade to Windows 10 even if you are running pirated version of the Windows 7/8.
