LG Chem introduces Hexagonal battery to improve smartwatch battery life


LG Chem, the chemical engineering subsidiary of LG has introduced the world's first hexagonal-shaped battery for smartwatches. The company has already started shipping the batteries to smartwatch manufacturers. 

They are being manufactured in Nanjing, China, and developed in co-operation with another top-tier technology company which LG hasn't revealed.

The new hexagonal-shaped battery will be used in future devices and offers improved battery life. It offers up to 25 percent improved storage capacity over the regular rectangular batteries. The company also claims that the new hexagonal batteries will add four hours of battery life for smartwatches. It is designed to provide a better fit for circular smartwatches.

LG has patented the batteries which it calls "Free Form Batteries" with "Stack and Folding" technology that gives interesting shapes to the battery. LG also plans to introduce batteries with various shapes, including an L-shaped model and a rectangular model with a hole in the middle.

LG predicts that it will become the top supplier of small sized batteries by 2018.
