Nokia confirms its plan to enter mobile device business, looking for a partner

Nokia issued a statement confirming that its entering the mobile device business. The Finnish company noted that the right path to get back to mobile phone business is through brand-licensing model. For this, the company is also looking for a partner that could take responsibility for all of the manufacturing, sales, marketing and customer support for the product.

“The right path back to mobile phones for Nokia is through a brand-licensing model. That means identifying a partner that can be responsible for all of the manufacturing, sales, marketing and customer support for a product." said Nokia Technologies spokesman Robert Morlino in a statement. Last year, Nokia followed the same strategy when they launched the N1 tablet under brand licensing via Foxconn.

Nokia also clarified that the partner they are looking for  should be able to do "heavy lifting and work closely with Nokia to deliver a great product." The company aims to bring their iconic design capabilities and technology innovation to the mobile space, in the form of products, people can hold in their hands. Nokia as a company exists today in mobile network infrastructure, location & mapping services and technology development and licensing. 

Throwing some light on possible timeline of launch of its mobile device, Nokia, once the world largest and Number one mobile device maker revealed that the comeback will be possible in Q4 2016, when the restrictions in place from the Microsoft's acquisition end.

Nokia sold its Devices and Services division to Microsoft and the terms of the deal stipulated that Nokia couldn't use the Nokia Brand on smartphone till 2016 and on feature phones for 10 years. After selling the business, Nokia surprised everyone by launching N1, a brand licensed table produced under the license of Foxconn last year in November.
