Swatch to launch its first smartwatch later this summer
The Wall Street Journal reports that Swiss watch manufacturer, Swatch will launch its first smartwatch this summer in the U.S, China and its Swiss home market, Switzerland.
Swatch's smartwatch will come with NFC (near field communication) on-board which is mainly used for mobile payments and hotel room access. The report didn’t mention anything about an OS, but states that it won't require daily recharging thanks to NFC's low power consumption. The smartwatch is said to be compatible with Android and iOS. Details beyond this is still scarce.
Nick Hayek Chief Executive, Swatch, told WSJ that 20,000 units are already in stock and the company is also very optimistic about the watch. The company will announce partners for the mobile payment service, he added. Hayek also said that the product is in response to the Apple Watch and similar devices.
Swatch made smartwatch is expected to go on sale in the second half of the year. Other luxury watch maker Tag Heuer will launch its own Android Wear smartwatch dubbed Carrera Wearable 01 in October this year for $1400.
