Lenovo and Motorola is now making smartphones in India

In a bid to give a fillip to the Prime Minister's 'Make in India' initiative, Chinese tech major Lenovo has started manufacturing smartphones in India. Lenovo has teamed up with contract manufacturer Flextronics for the same.

The company has started local manufacturing of its smartphones at Sriperumbudr near Chennai. The facility size is 40,000 square feet and the plant will house 1500 employees for manufacturing lines, quality assurance and product testing. This is the first time Lenovo and Motorola's smartphones will be made at the same facility outside China. Both brand will have separate lines with a combined annual capacity of 6 million units. Lenovo also owns Motorola Mobility. 

The Motorola Mote E is the first phone to be manufactured from the Chennai plant and the company will soon start manufacturing Lenovo K3 Note. It has already started delivering Motorola Moto E from the plant  The company has stressed that there will be no difference in quality standards with respect to phones built in India from those made in China.

Lenovo is not new to making its devices in India. The company has been manufacturing ThinkPad range of PCs locally in Puducherry (also known as Pondicherry) for quite a while now. Lenovo's push to make phones in India comes at a time when Lenovo and Motorola handsets are doing good business in country.

Lenovo is the latest smartphone maker to support 'Make in India' initiative. Earlier this month, Xiaomi tied up with Foxconn to manufacture Redmi 2 Prime at Sri City plant in Andhra Pradesh.

Domestic phone makers Celkon, Karbonn, Micromax-backed YU and International phone makers HTC, Sony, Vivo, Microsoft, LG, Asus have announced their plans to start manufacturing smartphones in India. Foxconn, the world’s largest custom electronics manufacturer including for Apple Inc., has also announced plans to set up as many as 12 factories in India.
