Motorola to start selling its smartphones through retail stores in India
Motorola pioneered the online-only sales model for smartphones in India. The brand has been going strong ever since it returned to the Indian market in 2014 after an absence of two years. Now the company is set to follow Xiaomi's footstep and start selling its phone via retail stores across the country.
According to a report from Economic Times, Motorola plans to make its smartphone available at brick and mortar stores in India. Motorola, now owned by Lenovo has been selling its smartphone exclusively via Flipkart since its entry in India last year. This move would help the company to make its smartphone available to a much wider consumer base. Also Lenovo's strong offline presence will help Motorola gain access to a wide offline retailer network.
"Motorola will go offline to make sure that more people buy Motorola products from brick-and-mortar stores in India,", said Chen Xudong, President, Mobile business group, Lenovo and chairman, Motorola Mobility operation board to ET. He added that online will remain an important strategy of the brand's sale strategy in India.
Motorola was performing well in the online-only sales model until a wide array of Chinese OEMs entered the country with there respective online-only strategies and took a chunk out of Motorola's India sales.
Although, India is fastest growing smartphone market, people still prefer buying devices from physical stores which lets them experience the device before they buy them.
Chinese handset maker Xiaomi recently announced its tie up with Redington to distribute its smartphone in brick-and-mortar stores in India and now Motorola has jumped on to the bandwagon too. Just a day ago Lenovo and Motorola announced that it will be manufacturing smartphone in India to support 'Make in India' initiative.
