Google says 'Chrome OS is here to stay'

Following last week's report that Google is planning to fold ChromeOS into Android by 2017, the search giant says that it has no plans to phase out Chrome OS or Chromebook models. The company says that it has been working on ways to bring together the best of both Android and Chrome OS.

Hiroshi Lockhemier, SVP Android, Chrome OS and Chromecast in a blog post titled 'Chrome OS Is Here to Stay' reiterated last week's report and said that the company is committed to Chrome OS and Chromebook.

"Over the last few days, there's been some confusion about the future of Chrome OS and Chromebooks based on speculation that Chrome OS will be folded into Android. While we've been working on ways to bring together the best of both operating systems, there's no plan to phase out Chrome OS," the Blog post read.

Google also said that it plans to release more features for Chrome OS, like new media player, visual refresh based on material design, improved performance and continued focus on security. "With our regular six-week software cycle and guaranteed auto-updates for five years, Chromebooks keep getting better over time," said the company.

Google also said that Chromebooks are selling very well, and it plans to roll out dozens of new Chromebooks in 2016.

Last week WSJ reported that Google plans to merge Android and Chrome OS, making it a single operating system by 2017. For this Google engineers have been working for the last two years and have made progress recently. The report also said that an early version of the OS could be demonstrated next year.The combined version of the OS will run on PC, giving Google opportunity to expand Google Play and its other properties even further. The report also claimed that Google will rename the Chromebook, once they run the new version of combined OS.
