Oppo, vivo push Lenovo and Xiaomi out from top five smartphone vendor list in Q1 2016

Xiaomi and Lenovo are not having a great start to the year 2016. Both companies that were positioned at 4th and 5th in the last quarter in terms of units shipped, have been replaced by Oppo and vivo in Q2 2016, according to IDC.

Oppo and vivo are positioned at 4th and 5th respectively in Q1 2016, in terms of units shipped. Oppo shipped 18.5 million smartphones in Q1 2016, an impressive YoY growth of 153.2 percent, and a market share of 5.5 percent. Meanwhile vivo recorded 14.2 million shipments, with 123.8 percent YoY growth. Both Oppo and vivo are also said to be positioned for a strong 2016.

Another Chinese vendor Huawei was positioned at 3rd. It shipped 27.5 million this quarter as compared to 17.4million units in Q1 2015, a YoY growth of 58.4 percent, and a market share of 8.2 percent.

The top two positions belongs to the big guns. Samsung cemented its number one position with 24.5 percent market share and shipped 81.9 million units. This is due to the sales of Galaxy S7/S7 edge, meanwhile the  affordable J series helped it win "both budget conscious consumers and first-time buyers."

Apple stood at second with 15.3 percent market share, down from 18.3 percent, and shipped 51.2 million iPhones, down from 61.2 million in the same quarter last year. This is the first ever YoY decline in its first quarter, mostly due to the sale of iPhone 6s series, as iPhone 6/6Plus owner have not felt the need for an upgrade. As a cautionary note, IDC added that the $399 iPhone SE won't help in boosting sales especially in India and China.

Overall global smartphone shipment growth declined for the first time and this is the smallest YoY growth on record. According to IDC, Smartphone vendors shipped a total of 334.9 million smartphones world-wide in Q1 2016, up slightly from 334.3 million units in Q1 2015.
