Samsung working on standalone VR headset
Samsung is working on a new standalone VR headset, confirmed Injong Rhee the company's head of R&D Samsung's ongoing developer conference in San Francisco. The company already has the Gear VR headset, which needs a smartphone to work, however the new headset will not require a smartphone to work.
“We are working on wireless and dedicated VR devices, not necessarily working with our mobile phone”, said Injong.
The new VR headset will be be fully wireless, and untethered and feature positional tracking which is currently present on high-end headsets including Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Samsung is also trying to include hand and gesture tracking tracking as well in the standalone VR headset.
Injong Rhee talking about the standalone VR headset said "You enter a holodeck, you’re actually in a virtual world, interacting with all the virtual objects as if you’re living there. That’s the kind of reality we’re trying to create on these virtual-reality headsets." Rhee also said that the new standalone VR headset might take some time to reach the consumers.
It's worth mentioning that, earlier there have been reports that Google is developing a standalone VR headset
