Qualcomm files complaint against Meizu in China court for patent infringement

Chip maker Qualcomm has filed a complaint against Chinese smartphone company Meizu with regulators in Beijing Intellectual Property Court, claiming that Meizu is using Qualcomm's patented technology without a license.

The issue is regarding the use of 3G (WCDMA and CDMA200) and 4G (LTE) wireless communications standards in Meizu phones without a license. Qualcomm is trying to reach an agreement with Meizu, but the company has not signed the deal, which has compelled Qualcomm to take legal action.

Qualcomm said that it has “negotiated extensively and in good faith with Meizu”, to sign a patent license agreement with terms of “rectification plan” agreed by Qualcomm and the National Development and Reform Commission of China, and Meizu would not agree.

Qualcomm gets majority of its profit from technology licensing. The chip maker said that more than 100 companies have accepted the rectification plan terms including tip Chinese phone makers Huawei, Lenovo and Xiaomi.

Meizu is yet to comment on the issue.
