Corning's Gorilla Glass 5 can survive up to 1.6 meter drop on rough surfaces
Glassmaker Corning has introduced the next iteration of its chemically strengthened glass technology used in mobile devices dubbed Gorilla Glass 5, which it claims to be 1.8 time mores durable the Gorilla Glass 4, when dropped on rough surfaces. (Via)
Internal research done by Corning showed that 85 percent of users dropped their smartphones at least once every year, and 55 percent drop it three or more time. They also found out that 60 percent of users drop their smartphones from waist or shoulder height (selfie height).
Keeping these numbers in mind, Corning constructed Gorilla Glass 5, and the company claims it to have 80 percent survival rate when dropped face-down from a height of 1.6 meters when tested on rough and unforgiving surfaces.
The drop tests were done using 0.6mm thick glass, but Corning also makes glass as thin as 0.4mm for smartphone OEMs who opt for thinner glass. So the result could vary, depending on different Gorilla Glass 5 thinkness on smartphones.
Corning revealed that its Gorilla Glass has been used on over 4.5 billion devices, including more than 1,800 products across 40 major brands. The Gorilla Glass 5 is currently in production and will be seen in devices launching later this year.
