Samsung develops new expansion slot to support both UFS and microSD cards

Samsung introduced the world's first removable Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 1.0 memory cards last week that are five times faster than microSD card. Since the cards comes with a different pin layout, it doesn't work with microSD card slot, instead requires a different card slot.

In order to fix this hurdle Samsung have developed a card slot that will accept both UFS 1.0 and microSD cards. The company said that it has teamed up with several manufacturers to integrate the next generation devices with these card socket. This card socket will let users to use either microSD cards or the new faster UFS card on their smartphone or any other devices.

"The new UFS cards are not compatible with the current microSD card socket. However, we have developed a socket design that can support both UFS cards and microSD cards. We are working with different partners in the industry on this integration for next-generation devices," Samsung told Droid Life.

UFS card comes in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities and offers more than five time read speed of 530Mbps and almost twice the writing speed of 170Mbps, when compared to microSD cards, making it ideal for high-res devices including VR cameras, actions cams or DSLRs.
