Google Maps for Android gets WiFi Only mode, SD card storage for offline Maps

Google has rolled out two new features to Maps for Android – a Wi-Fi only mode and microSD card support that will allow users to save data on the go.

Now a new "WiFi Only" option will appear in the Settings Menu of Maps app, which replaces "Offline Areas". Once enabled, the app will stop using cellular data and instead load majority of the data through WiFi or work with your saved offline areas (when not connected to WiFi). This means the app won't consume your mobile data when you are on the go.

Maps for Android is also getting SD card support, allowing you to download offline maps to microSD card, instead of internal storage of your phone, To save offline maps to a microSD card, you will have to go to Menu > Offline areas > Settings > Storage preferences > Device, and then tap on the SD Card option.

The update is being rolled out gradually to Android users, so it may take time to reach your device.
