Google Releases Nougat Source Code! Expect AOSP Ports Soon!

Google has just pushed over the AOSP source code for Android Nougat 7.0 to their Git. The source code can be found here.

What does this mean?

For the folks over at XDA-Developers, it means a lot. It is start of a new era of AOSP ports and a new release of CyanogenMod. If your device is developed actively by the Android community at XDA, then you can expect to get a taste of Nougat anytime soon.

As soon as the developers get their hands on the source code, they try to make an AOSP port for the device(s) they support. Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is the stock version of Andorid minus all the bloatware. It is the code which every device which has Android Nougat runs on. Nexus devices are very popular amongst Android lovers for the very reason that they run a version of Android which is closest to AOSP. Most of the manufacturers such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Sony etc modify the AOSP code to a great extent, adding their custom skins, apps and more features. This results in different variants of the same version of Android, with each variant offering it's own unique taste. You might have come across these different variants by the name of TouchWiz (developed by Samsung), MiUI (developed by Xiaomi), Flyme OS (developed by Meizu), CyanogenOS and many more.

The release of Nougat's AOSP code also embarks a start to a new era of custom ROMs, reviews to which you will be able to find on our YouTube channel. Most of the custom ROMs are either based off the AOSP code released by Google or off CyanogenMod. CyanogenMod is a free, community built distribution of Android, based on AOSP, which greatly extends the capabilities of your device. When Google releases the AOSP source code, the developers over at CyanogenMod add on their custom features to it, which they believe should have been present in Google's AOSP code. Once CyanogenMod modifies the AOSP code, they release it to the Android community. CyanogenMod's source code is open source which offers the developers a chance to adapt it to the devices they support. The first few months after Nougat's release are utilised by CyanogenMod developers to create their custom variant of Android. Once CyanogenMod has been polished enough, ROMs such as Resurrection Remix, Android Ice Cold Project, BlissROM, Mokee Open Source Project, will also start their journey in the Nougat era. ROMs such as Dirty Unicorns which just like CyanogenMod are based completely off AOSP will also come up.

For an Android freak, the release of this source code is rather more exciting than an average consumer. We flash ROMs, find out the best one that fits our needs and then use it till we find another one. The custom ROM reviews over at our YouTube channel help you in finding that very ROM.

Let the ROMs rollout begin now!
