Qualcomm's Snapdragon 653 SoC to reportedly feature ARM's Cortex A73 CPU
Qualcomm's mid-range Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor powers mid-range smartphones like LeEco Le 2, LG G5 SE, HTC 10 LifeStyle, Xiaomi Mi Max, Galaxy A9/ A9 Pro, Oppo R9/R9 Plus and more. Now the chip-maker is reportedly working on its successor called Snapdragon 653, which could be the first chipset to use ARM's new Cortex A73 architecture.
According to the report, the Snapdragon 653 will have the model number MSM78976 Pro, which indicates it will be an upgrade over Snapdragon 652, which carries the model number MSM8975. The Snapdragon 653 will be built on the same 28nm process as Snapdragon 652, but will have octa-core processor with 4 x Cortex A73 cores at 2GHz and 4 x Cortex A53 cores 1.4GHz, and supported by an 550 MHz Adreno graphics.
Other features of Snapdragon 653 SoC includes LPDDR4 RAM, eMMC 5.1 storage, up to 24MP camera and dual ISP (Image Signal Processor). For connectivity, the chip will support USB 3.0, WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.1 and LTE Cat 9.
As Qualcomm has not yet confirmed the existence of Snapdragon 653 SoC, it is recommended to take these leaks with a pinch of salt.
