Exclusive: Android Nougat Update Rollout Statistics
It's been more than a month since Google released Nougat 7.0 to the following roster of Nexus devices:
- Nexus 6P
- Nexus 5X
- Nexus Player
- Nexus 9 (WiFi and LTE variants)
- Nexus 6
However, Nougat 7.0 was not rolled out to the Nexus 6 & the Nexus 9 LTE as we reported to you earlier. These two devices will directly be updated to Nougat 7.1, which will be released on October 4 when Google will announce the Pixel devices.
We were able to get hold of some internal statistics regarding this update. As of September 22, that is one month after Nougat's rollout was started, Nougat 7.0 has made it's way to 23% of the eligible number of Nexus devices. Do note that this percentage includes the Nexus 6 & Nexus 9 LTE models. Android One devices are not a part of this percentage.
Nougat's rollout within the first month is a lot slower than it's predecessor Marshmallow's update rollout within the first month as well. This is quite surprising since one of the major reasons why Google had started Android N's preview builds about four months prior to the Google I/O was to get a stable build of Nougat out by August. However, the postponement of the update of Nexus 6 & Nexus 9 from Nougat 7.0 to Nougat 7.1 clearly indicates that Google has failed badly in this attempt. In fact, the recent update has not gone well with the Nexus 5X and 6P users as well, who have constantly been complaining about battery life on their device. In the end, it just seems as if Google screwed up Nougat.
