Google's October 2016 Security Bulletin Goes Live, Has 2 Levels

On the eve of the Pixel launch event, Google has thrown open the October 2016 Security Bulletin live. This is the second security patch which is being rolled out after Nougat's release.

It's been more than a year since Google has started rolling out the monthly security patches to the Nexus, Pixel and Android One devices. These security patches are also handed over to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) on the first day of the last month itself. It means that the October security patch must have been handed over to the manufacturers on the first day of September itself.

This month's patch is divided into two levels dated 2016-10-01 and 2016-10-05. Obviously the 2016-10-05 security patch would make your device the most secure, however in the end the patch level your device is updated to completely depends on the handset maker.

This is how the October security bulletin looks like:

• 2016-10-01: Partial security patch level string. This security patch level string indicates that all issues associated with 2016-10-01 (and all previous security patch level strings) are addressed.
• 2016-10-05: Complete security patch level string. This security patch level string indicates that all issues associated with 2016-10-01 and 2016-10-05 (and all previous security patch level strings) are addressed.

Google's report mentions that there have been no reported cases of active exploits using any of the vulnerabilities fixed in these patches. However, even though these are just incremental updates, it is still recommended that you update your device with them as soon as you get an OTA notification regarding the same.
