Samsung begins mass production of SoC based on 10nm FinFET technology
Samsung has announced that it has started mass production of System-on-Chip (SoC) based on 10nm FinFET technology. The South Korean tech giant claims that it is first in the industry to make 10nm SoCs, before chip maker Intel.
The new 10nm FinFET process (10LPE) adopts an advanced 3D transistor structure with additional enhancement in both process technology and design enablement compared to its predecessor 14nm offering up to 30 percent increase in area efficiency with 27 percent higher performance and 40 percent lower power consumption.
After the first gen 10nm process (10LPE), Samsung will start mass producing 2nd gen 10nm process (10LPP) with improvements in performance in the second half of 2017.
Samsung says the SoCs based on 10nm process technology will be used in devices launching early next year, and will become more widely available throughout 2017.
Earlier this month South Korean publication ETNews reported that Samsung will be the sole contract manufacturer of Qualcomm's new high-end Snapdragon 830 chips using 10nm process that will power most of the high-end flagship devices in 2017, including half of Samsung's next flagship Galaxy S8, which is expected to launch in February 2017.
Samsung will also most likely use the 10nm process to manufacture its in-house top-end Exynos processor, reportedly called Exynos 8895, which will also be utilized by the Galaxy S8, aimed at Asian market.
