Amazon Prime Video coming to 200 countries including India in December 2016
Amazon launched Amazon Prime in India back in July this year, with the promise of bringing Prime Video service to the country soon. Now the e-commerce giant is all set for a massive roll out of its video streaming services globally, to take on Netflix.
Amazon has announced that it will roll out Prime Video service to more than 200 countries including India starting from December. The details of the roll out was shared (and confirmed) while promoting the latest car show "The Grand Tour" starring Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. Currently Prime Video service is only available in the U.S., U.K., Germany, Austria, and Japan.
Amazon's rival Netflix is already available worldwide, except for China due to strict regulation. It expanded into 130 countries in January including India, reaching a total of more than 190 countries.
The plans for Netflix in India starts at Rs. 500, while Amazon Prime was launched at a introductory offer of Rs. 499. Currently it is not clear, whether Prime Video service will be launched in current package or as a paid add-on.
Amazon has been taking steps to increase its local content library. It has teamed up with leading Bollywood production house including Dharma Productions, T-Series, Vishesh Films to make their entire catalogue of existing and upcoming Bollywood movies available on Prime Video India. It has also partnered with animation studios for kids show like Baahubali-The Lost Legends, Chhota Bheem, Super Bheem and Mighty Raju.
