Asus to launch Tango-enabled ZenFone AR at CES 2017
The Lenovo PHAB 2 Pro was the first Tango-enable smartphone, and now it appears that Asus is joining the bandwagon. According to Asus CEO Jerry Shen, the company is all set to announce the second Tango smartphone at CES 2017, to be held in Las Vegas in January.
Asus' Tango enabled smartphone will be called ZenFone AR and will come with "advanced functionality and performance at a competitive price". Unfortunately other details are scarce.
Tango technology enables AR (augmented reality) experience on smartphone to interact with the surrounding virtually through AR. For instance, Lenovo's PHAB 2 Pro has three camera sensors for AR: a 16MP regular camera, a time of flight (TOF) camera that senses the depth of field and a "fisheye" IR sensor that can sense motion. The three camera sensors together maps physical surrounding and turns it into a augmented reality setup. This can be utilized in many ways like playing AR games, or use the 3D mapping for recreational or educational purchases
Moving on Shen also shared details of the fourth generation ZenFone smartphones aka ZenFone 4. Asus plans to launch the ZenFone 4 family in second quarter of 2017, with camera enhancements over the existing ZenFone 3 family. In addition Asus plans to launch an AIO (All-in-One) VR headset with built-in camera, sensors and controllers.
