CyanogenMod 14.1 Official Builds Have Started
Rejoice flashaholics! If you, like me, have been waiting for Android Nougat based CyanogenMod 14 builds to pop up, then your wait is finally over. Nougat 7.1 based CyanogenMod 14.1 is now available for the OnePlus 3 in the form of 'experimental' builds. Support for more devices will be added in the coming days.
The 'experimental' builds currently lack the presence of CyanogenMod's theming engine (CMTE). Unexpectedly, the bringing up of CMTE has been slower than expected this year. Even though the commits for the same have been merged, we did see that because of the slow development of CMTE this year, ROMs such as Dirty Unicorns are now resorting to avail the services of Substratum instead of CMTE.
In general, compared to last year, the development of CyanogenMod this year has been slower as well. Last year, nightly builds of CM13 were available within one month after Google had released the source code of Android Marshmallow 6.0 in October 2015. With the release of the Android 7.0's AOSP code in August this year, Nougat source code had dropped in two months earlier as compared to the same time last year. This effectively should have given Cyanogen's developers two extra months of time (as compared to CM13 last year) to work on CM14. However, as it stands, CM14 is still in the 'experimental' stage and taking into consideration the time CM developers have taken this year to bring up CM14, we definitely believe that nightly builds of CM14 would not be starting before this month. Nighly builds for CM13 had been introduced around the same time last year on November 25, 2015.
Since these builds are experimental, they are bound to contain bugs. OnePlus 3 users who tested out the experimental builds have said that they experienced multiple force closes while using applications such as Snapchat, Facebook and Messenger (by Facebook). There have also been complaints of the poor quality of pictures clicked using the camera and voice echoing during calls.
If you are a OnePlus 3 user, then you can grab the experimental build from this link.
After taking a closer look at CyanogenMod's sources, we were able to spot that official CM14.1 builds for the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and HTC A9 should be available anytime soon.
