Samsung patent reveals possible foldable smartphone design

Besides Galaxy S8, it appears that Samsung has something more interesting in its arsenal – a foldable smartphone which is also known as Project Valley. Until now, we have only heard rumors regarding the foldable phone, but now a new patent application has surfaced, that shows the foldable smartphone design.

The patent was filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office and reveals sketches of the foldable phone, which shows its hinges from various angles. The hinges looks similar to that of Microsoft's Surface Book, and will allow the phone to be folded right down to the middle like a wallet.

Overall the design looks like a clamshell smartphone when folded, which is a segment, Samsung still has presence in and launches at least two models every year. Samsung recently launched the high-end W2017, with two 4.2-inch Super AMOLED displays and Snapdragon 820 processor.

Back in August Samsung's mobile chief Koh Dong-jin hinted the company is working on a foldable smartphone with plans to launch the first model soon.

According to reports Samsung will unveil its first foldable smartphone next year. In addition, LG is also expected to launch a similar device next year, followed by Apple and Google in 2018.

However, Lenovo has beaten these smartphone makers in the race and has already demoed concept of foldable smartphone. The name of device is Folio and is a foldable tablet, which can be folded into half to function as smartphone.
