Redmi Note 3 Is Now Getting The Marshmallow Update
Xiaomi's budget offering of Redmi Note 3 was launched early this year in India. Although the device's specifications do a great justice to it's price tag of ₹9,999 (2GB/16GB) & ₹11,999 (3GB/32GB), the only place where we think the Redmi Note 3 lost out was in it's Android version. At the time of it's launch in India, the Redmi Note 3 was powered by Lollipop 5.1.1 based MIUI 7 out of the box.
Since Android Marshmallow was released back in the fall of 2015, we certainly did expect the Redmi Note 3 to be powered by Marshmallow at the time of it's launch in March 2016. Even though Xiaomi did update the device to MIUI 8 later on, it failed to update the Android version
Several Redmi Note 3 users in India have now reported that they are receiving the Marshmallow 6.0 based MIUI 8.1.1.0. Xiaomi appears to be currently testing out the Marshmallow based variant of MIUI 8. We can say this because the update screen, shown above, mentions the update status as "NIGHTLY." Nightly builds are bound to be unstable and may consist of performance related bugs. The update weighs 1.3GB and is currently being extended to select Redmi Note 3 users. We do expect Xiaomi to go ahead with a broader rollout once Marshmallow for the Redmi Note 3 gets a stable status.
As far as the changes introduced with this update go, the changelog mentioned is similar to the one which Lollipop based MIUI 8 had. Even though Xiaomi may not have added new features, it is certainly expected that the latest security patches and bug fixes will be a part of the update.
