Francisco Franco Asks OnePlus To Release Nougat Kernel Source Code For OnePlus 3/3T
If you are one of those who love to modify their Android device to their liking through the means of flashing custom ROMs and custom kernels, then you would have definitely heard of the famous kernel developer Francisco Franco. To build custom kernels for any device, developers like Franco need the kernel source code of the device on the top of which they will base their work on. The kernel source code for a particular device is different for different Android versions.
OnePlus had updated the duo of OnePlus 3 &3T to Nougat just a few weeks back. To keep in accordance with the terms laid down by the General Public License (GPL), OnePlus is meant to release the source code of the kernel included in the Nougat update for both the devices. The kernel source code will not only help developers like Franco in building custom kernels, but it will also help in ensuring that Android's core principle of being open source is held in high standards. After Google, OnePlus is considered as the most developer friendly OEM out there. However, OnePlus hasn't done justice to it's developer friendly reputation by not releasing the kernel source code.
Disappointed by the very same fact, Franco tried to reach out to OnePlus, requesting them to release the source code.
Hey @getpeid stop breaking the GPL and release the updated Kernel sources for N. You understand you're fucking us instead of helping?— Francisco Franco (@franciscof_1990) January 12, 2017
Although there was no response from OnePlus founder Carl Pei (@getpeid), OnePlus' support handle on Twitter did get back to Franco with the following reply.
@franciscof_1990 We are giving all our efforts to provide what's best for our fans. We ask you to extend your patience. Please keep posted.— OnePlus Support (@OnePlus_Support) January 13, 2017
Whatever the situation might be now, it is indeed interesting to note that when OnePlus launched the OnePlus 3T with Marshmallow 6.0.1 in November, it had made the kernel source code of Marshmallow available a day prior to 3T's official launch. As in case of the OnePlus 3, the Marshmallow source code was made available just a day after the device's launch in March 2016.
