LG G6 will reportedly use Snapdragon 821, as Samsung claimed Snapdragon 835 initial quantities
LG has already confirmed that the company will unveil the successor of flagship G5, the LG G6 on February 26, a day before MWC kicks off in Barcelona. The LG G6 was expected to be equipped with Snapdragon 835 processor, but that is not the case anymore, as Samsung has hijacked (literally speaking) the chip.
According to a new report from Forbes, the LG will use 2016's Snapdragon 821 chip for its G6, as Samsung has called dibs on the initial quantities of Snapdragon 835 chip. Samsung has reportedly claimed the entire supply of Snapdragon 835 chipset leaving LG and other OEMs with Snapdragon 821 chip at their disposal.
The report citing industry insiders says that the Snapdragon 835 will be available in sufficient quantities for other OEMs only after Samsung ships the Galaxy S8 which will apparently take place in mid-April.
The situation has left LG with very little option, either the company can delay the launch of G6 and wait for Snapdragon 835 chips to roll out, or simply use the Snapdragon 821 and launch the handset without any delay.
If LG uses Snapdragon 821, all the company can do now is come out with a device with some unique features, as it will not be able to market G6 for its power.
Even HTC had no choice with their latest flagship U Ultra and had to utilize Snapdragon 821 chip because Snapdragon 835 out of their reach as well, reported Forbes.
This is no surprise, as Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 835 processor is co-manufactured with Samsung using the company's 10nm process. This also means that Galaxy S8 will be the first smartphone to ship with Snapdragon 835 processor.
The Snapdragon 821 processor is the same chip used in the most popular devices of 2016 including Google's Pixel & Pixel XL and OnePlus 3T to name a few. However it is not as powerful as Snapdragon 835, which offers better performance and improved efficiency.
In related, a new render of LG G6 have hit the interwebs (courtesy of The Verge) suggesting that the device will sport metal and glass design with curved corners. The publication also claims that LG G6 will feature 5.7-inch display with an unusual aspect ratio of 2:1 and very slim bezels carrying a screen-to body ratio greater than 90 percent. It will have waterproof body, 3.5mm audio jack, non-removable battery, USB Type-C port, dual-rear camera setup and fingerprint scanner. It is also rumored to support Google Assistant, which is only found on Google's Pixel and Pixel smartphones.
