Apple will start assembling iPhone SE in India soon

Earlier this month, Apple finally received Indian government's approval to begin manufacturing and assembly of iPhone in India. Now the Cupertino giant is reportedly all set to kickstart the process by assembling iPhones in the country, according to Economic Times.

Apple will initially assemble three to four lakh units of iPhone SE handset in India at the plant set up by the company's Taiwanese manufacturing partner Wistron, which is located in Bengaluru's industrial district Peenya. Operations at the plant are due to begin in April. At present, the company will only focus on assembling iPhone SE in the country, and has no plans to manufacture any other iPhone models.

The iPhone SE was launched last year, and was targeted at developing market, by positioning it as an affordable iPhone costing Rs. 39,000. But in a market where well spec'd budget smartphones priced around Rs. 10,000 take home a large piece of the pie, owning iPhone is still a dream for majority of Indians. 

Local assembly would bring the price down further of the iPhone SE, and Apple will be able to sell the device at an competitive price, than the current retail price of Rs. 30,000.

Last year, Apple sold a record 2.5 million iPhones in India, its all time best, but managed to grab the tenth position in India's smartphone, while leading the premium smartphone market.
