Xiaomi to announce its Pinecone processor on February 28
Apple, Samsung and Huawei design and make their own chip for use in their smartphones. Soon another player will join the list.
Xiaomi has scheduled an event in Beijing, China, on February 28, to introduce the company's in-house processor. Xiaomi's processor is called Pinecone, and is a result of the company's partnership with chip maker Leadcore, that started back in 2014.
Xiaomi is making its own processor so it can move away from Qualcomm and MediaTek as its primary chip provider, and use Leadcore's tech to keep the cost low in the long run, as a result, making their devices more affordable.
According to reports, there will be atleast two Pinecone chip, one mid-ranged with model-number V670 and the other a high performance chip with model number V970.
The V670 is an octa-core processor with 4 x large Cortex A-53 cores + 4 x small Cortex A53 cores. It is built using 28nm manufacturing process and packs Mali T860 GPU. The V970 is manufactured using 10nm process, same as Snapdragon 835 chip. It is an octa-core processor with 4 x Cortex A73 core and 4 x Cortex A53 cores offering maximum clock speep of 2.7GHz. It will feature Mali G71 MP12 GPU.
Previous rumors have suggested that the in-house Pincone chip will be used on Xiaomi's upcoming smartphone, Mi 5c (aka Meri), which has been part of several leaks. According to Geekbench, Mi 5c will feature Pinecone octa-core CPU, 3GB RAM and Andorid 7.1.1 Nougat. However, it is not known, if Xiaomi plans to launch the smartphone along with the processor.]
