Samsung blocks users from reconfiguring the Galaxy S8's Bixby button
Samsung's latest flagship, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have a dedicated button on the left side to launch the voice assistant Bixby.
The company has already confirmed that Bixby voice assistant will not be available during the commercial launch of Galaxy S8/Galaxy S8+, and will only have features like Bixby Vision (identifies real-world object and provides related details on-screen), Bixby Home (for Google-like info cards) and Bixby Reminders (set reminders).
However, it was recently reported that using third party apps like All in one Gestures, the buttons could be reconfigured to launch Google assistant or camera or any of your favorite apps instead.
Now Samsung has pushed an update to the Telus variant of Galaxy S8 (Canada), disabling the ability to reconfigure the Bixby button to avoid perform other functions. This means the button will belong to Bixby, and you won't be able to set third party apps.
This was also confirmed by a Samsung representative Philip Berne confirming that users won't be able to reconfigure the Bixby button. He also said that using third-party Android apps to remap the Bixby button exploits system-level behavior, which the company's doesn't officially support.
