TRAI Orders Jio To Withdraw Summer Surprise Offer

The Telecom Regulatory Authority Of India (TRAI) has ordered Reliance Jio to withdraw it's Summer Surprise Offer scheme. Under the recently announced Summer Surprise Offer, Jio Prime members who recharged with an amount of Rs.303 or more got three months of complimentary services (which includes unlimited voice calls, SMS and data per day) in addition to the benefits of their purchased plan.

Jio issued the following statement

Today, TRAI has advised Jio to withdraw the three months complimentary benefits of Jio Summer Surprise. Jio is in the process of fully complying with the regulator's advice, and will be withdrawing the three months complimentary benefits of Jio Summer Surprise as soon as operationally feasible, over the next few days.

The regulatory's order comes as a huge sigh of relief for Jio's telecom counterparts Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea, who have constantly reported about a plunge in profits and consumer base. Jio had recently reported that more than 72 million Jio subscribers had decided to avail it's Prime membership. As of February, Jio had a customer base amounting to 100 million consumers. It is thus evident that more than seventy percent of Jio subscribers have chosen to opt for Jio's premium services. In order to compete with Jio, the incumbent telco trio of Airtel, Vodafone & Idea have had introduced competitive plans, however the plan rates haven't been anywhere as cheap as Jio's. 

When does the Summer Surprise Offer end?

Although Jio didn't announce any timeline for the offer's withdrawl, it did state that the offer will be called off when it's "operationally feasible, over the next few days." Jio insiders have told The Economic Times that the offer will be withdrawn either by tonight or tomorrow.

I have already availed Jio's Summer Surprise Offer, what about me?

Don't worry! If you have made your first recharge payment as a Jio Prime member before this, you will be able to avail the benefits of the Summer Surprise Offer.

Reliance clarified this in their statement below.

All customers who have subscribed to Jio 'Summer Surprise' offer prior to its discontinuation will remain eligible for the offer.
