Western Digital outs its first portable SSD
Western digital has been selling cheap and portable external hard drives for years, but it has never released a portable SSD (solid state drive).
Now the company is launching its first WD brand portable super-fast SSD drive called My Passport SSD.
The new SSD drive offers speeds of up to 515 MB/s and is designed for the latest generation of desktops with USB Type-C port. It is USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10GB/s) ready with a USB Type-C to Type-C cable. There's also an adapter to use with the more tradition USB Type-A ports found on many computers.
It is compatible with Windows 10 PCs, and Mac, and features 256-bit AES hardware encryption and password protection. It is also designed to withstand drops of up to 6.5 foot, making it shock resistant.
Western Digital's My Passport SSD will be available in 1TB, 512GB and 256GB capacities priced at $399.99, $199.99 and $99.99 respectively, and is backed by three year warranty. It will be available in the U.S from BestBuy, and worldwide at select e-tailers and retailers this quarter.
