Facebook's Express WiFi launches commercially in India

Facebook started testing Express WiFi in India back in August 2016. Now the social networking giant has announced the commercial launch of the service in the country, to provide fast reliable and affordable Internet to the masses. Besides, India, Express WiFi is also live in Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria and Indonesia.

Express WiFi is designed to complement mobile data offerings by providing low-cost, high bandwidth alternative for getting online and access apps, download and stream content. It offers a minimum speed of 10Mbps.

Currently the Express WiFi service is available in nearly 700 hotspots across four Indian states, deployed in partnership with ISPs AirJaldi in Uttarakhand, LMES in Rajasthan, Tikona in Gujarat and is being rolled out with Shaildhar in Meghalaya. Facebook will further add 20,000 more hotspots across the country in partnership with Airtel, which will begin to be deployed over the next few months.

Anyone can access the Express Wi-Fi network by signing up with an Express Wi-Fi retailer and purchasing a daily, weekly or monthly data pack at a rate set by partners. They will then be able to connect to the Express Wi-Fi hotspot, register/create an account, login and start browsing or use any app on the entire internet.

Express WiFi is Facebook's second attempt to provide Internet to India, after TRAI (Telecom Authority of India) banned Free Basics, a program that offered free access to internet (33 websites) in  the country.
