Xiaomi explains why it got rid of the 3.5mm audio jack in Mi 6
There is nothing much to complain about Xiaomi's latest flagship Mi 6. While it does not offer any invitational feature, the Mi 6 sports a sleek looking premium design and boasts specs that you get in a 2017 flagship. It's also cheap starting at just CNY 2499 ($360 | Rs. 23,500).... but the only thing frustrating is it ditches the 3.5mm jack in favor of USB-C audio, joining the likes of Apple and HTC.
If you were waiting for an explanation on why Xiaomi ditched the headphone jack, it has now given the reason. In a statement to Android Central, Xiaomi stated that it removed the headphone jack on Mi 6 to add other components like a larger battery and dual-rear cameras.
Smartphones are highly-integrated products and internal space is precious. By removing the headphone jack, we can save room for other components such as a bigger battery. Audio through USB Type-C is becoming more common, and will continue to provide excellent sound quality.
Like the Mi 5, the Mi 6 also has 5.15-inch screen size, but Xiaomi has increased the battery capacity of the Mi 6 by 10.5 percent, that is, from 3000mAh to 3350mAh.
Furthermore, Mi 6 also has dual-rear camera module, even though the overall size of the chassis is same as Mi 5 and dual-cameras needs some space to fit inside a device. Considering that headphone jack on Mi 5 was on the top, Xiaomi would have wanted more space to fit the dual camera on Mi 6.
Thankfully, Xiaomi is bundling the Mi 6 with a USB Type-C to 3.5mm adapter in the retail box, so Xiaomi has got prospective buyers somewhat covered.
