Android O Developer Preview 4 Is Out, Includes 'Octopus' Easter Egg
Since this developer preview is aimed at aiding developers in getting their apps ready for Android O, there aren't many changes. In words of Google, DP4 "includes the final system behaviors, the latest bug fixes and optimizations, and the final APIs (API level 26)."
The release notes do not mention any issues. The DP4 can hence be run as a daily driver. The Android O DP4 is available for the following devices:
- Google Pixel
- Google Pixel XL
- Pixel C
- Nexus 5X
- Nexus 6P
- Nexus Player
If you are already using a developer preview build then you will be receiving a notification of the update soon. If you wish to move over to DP4 on your eligible Nexus or Pixel devices then you can enroll in the Android Beta program. Alternatively, you can install the DP4 manually by flashing its system or OTA image. Download links to the system and OTA images can be found at the end of this article.
Although Google has confirmed Android O as Android 8.0, it is yet to confirm the name of the new version of Android. Android O DP4 includes an octopus as its easter egg. Speculations are rife that Android O will be called as Android Octopus. The previous versions of Android have been named after tasty treats. Hence Android Octopus might not be true after all. The octopus easter egg might relate Android 8.0 to the eight legs of an octopus.
Google will be releasing the final stable version of Android 8.0 later this quarter. Android Nougat was released on August 22 last year. The stable public release of Android O in August seems imminent.
