BSNL to offer ultra-fast 1Gbps broadband connection
State run telco BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd) has introduced its next-generation optical fibre based technology. The next-gen 100G Optical Transport Network (NG-OTN) will allow BSNL to offer a broadband connection with download speeds of up to 1000mbps or 1Gbps.
The NG-OTN network was launched by Telecom minister Manoj Sinha in Mumbai.
BSNL says its next gen Gigabit-OTN technology will help service central projects like BharatNet, SWAN, NKN, etc. The tech is said to cover a total of 100 major cities including state capital which will be implemented in a phased manner during current financial year (by March 2018) with a capital outlay of Rs. 330 crore. It has already been successfully implemented in 44 of the 100 cities.
“This project aimed to enhance existing 10G capacity to 100G capacity of Optical Fibre infrastructure of BSNL. This means now in back-end we will have 10 times more capacity and will be launching new plans with 10 times more speed. This enhanced capacity will help retail customer base of BSNL in landline, FTTH and mobile services,” said BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Anupam Shrivastava.
Currently BSNL offers a top speed of 24mbps for fixed line broadband connection and 100mbp with its FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) services. With Gigabit-OTN, BSNL will be able to deliver up to 1Gbps on FTTH networks in all state capitals and other top cities.
