Nokia and Xiaomi sign patent agreements

Finland's Nokia and Chinese device maker Xiaomi have entered into a multi-year patent agreement including a cross-license to each company's cellular standard essential patents. As part of the deal, Xiaomi also acquired patent assets for Nokia, which it can apply for its future products. Financial details were not disclosed.

The Nokia and Xiaomi business collaboration will see Nokia supplying network infrastructure equipment designed to deliver the high-capacity, low-power requirements expected by large web providers and data centre operators.

The companies will also work together on optical transport solutions for data center interconnect, IP Routing based on Nokia's new FP4 network processor and a data center fabric solution.

In addition Nokia and Xiaomi have agreed to explore opportunities for further co-operation, in areas like Internet of Things (IoT), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI).

The deal is a big one for Xiaomi, and will definitely help the Chinese company to expand globally.

Commenting on the agreement, Rajeev Suri, President and CEO of Nokia said, "Xiaomi is one of the world's leading smartphone manufacturers and we are delighted to have reached an agreement with them. In addition to welcoming such a prominent global technology company to our family of patent licensees, we look forward to working together on a wide range of strategic projects." 

Lei Jun, Chairman and CEO of Xiaomi also commented on the partnership, saying, "Our collaboration with Nokia will enable us to tap on its leadership in building large, high performance networks and formidable strength in software and services, as we seek to create even more remarkable products and services that deliver the best user experience to our Mi fans worldwide."
