Samsung Galaxy S8 Active surface in live images
For the last four years, Samsung has been releasing a rugged version of its flagship Galaxy S line with the 'Active' moniker. Even this year the South Korean tech giant will also release an Active variant of its flagship Galaxy S8, and it seems like the launch is getting closer as a number of live images have flooded online.
Like the previous Active devices, Samsung's Galaxy S8 Active will be more rugged and durable version of Galaxy S8, but will get some design change. It is expected to have the same screen size as the standard Galaxy S8's 5.8-inch unit, but ditch the dual-curved edge display. Instead it will have flat display with thick bezels on all side to protect the display. The body is said to be made of polycarbonate, but will have metal frames.
The Active version will also ditch the capacitive buttons for on-screen button, and the Active key has been replace by Bixby button. Also given that it's a rugged model, the Galaxy S8 Active is 1.5 times thicker than the standard Galaxy S8.
The source also says that Galaxy S8 Active will pack 4000mAh battery instead of 3000mAh battery used on Galaxy S8, and be exclusive to US carrier AT&T. Since this is a rugged device, we can expect it to have military grade casing to withstand drops, extreme environements and IP68 for water and dust resistance.
Other expected specs for the Galaxy S8+ include Gorilla Glass 5 protection for the screen, Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage with microSD card expansion, rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, wireless charging, 12MP rear camera and 8MP front camera. It will run Android 7.1.1 out of the box and will not feature underwater camera mode present on previous Active models.
As mentioned earlier, the Galaxy S8 Active will be exclusive to the U.S market and is expected to launch soon.
