Apple may add LTE to new smartwatch
Multiple reports in the past have suggested that Apple watch will have cellular connectivity. Apple planned to release an LTE-capable Apple Watch last year, but ditched it later, due to battery life issue. Now according to a report from Bloomberg, Apple is planning to release a new version of its smartwatch with 4G LTE cellular modem.
This means unlike current Apple Watch models, which need to be connected wirelessly to an iPhone to stream music, send message and other functions, the new Apple watch will be able to connect directly to cellular networks, and act as a standalone device to perform the same functions, without the need of having a phone around.
The report says that Intel will supply the LTE modems for the new watch, instead of Qualcomm, which used to be the main modem supplier for iPhones, until it had legal dispute with Apple.
Furthermore, Apple is in talks with carriers in the U.S and Europe about offering cellular version. Only a subset of network provides will support the LTE Apple Watch, but in the US, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile plan to offer cellular support to the watch.
The wearable market is dominated by Xiaomi and Fitbit thanks to low-cost fitness trackers, however, Apple Watch is considered to be the best selling smartwatch, even though it remains a small part of Apple's revenue. According to analyst, making Apple Watch a standalone device will be a game changer, and may boost sales of the product.
Apart from adding cellular chip to Apple Watch, Apple is also planning software changes for the device. Apple at WWDC announced that the upcoming WatchOS 4 will have more Siri voice-enabled feature, the ability to connect to gym equipment, send payments in iMessage and display new stories.
Apple plans to launch the LTE Apple Watch by the end of the year, however, it also possible to debut in 2018. Apple is not the first company to offer a smartwatch with cellular chip. LG, Samsung and Huawei, already have 4G enabled watches.
