Insta360 One is a compact 4K 360 camera that lets you shoot first, point later
China based camera maker Insta360 has introduced its new compact 360 camera dubbed Insta360 One, that lets you shoot 360 video at resolutions of 4K (3840 x 1920 at 30fps, or 2560 x 1280 at 60fps), and 24MP still photos. As of now, the camera is only compatible with iOS devices, but an Android verison will be coming soon.
The Insta 360 One offers three modes of operation that includes standalone use, remote control via Bluetooth, and control via a direct connection to a smartphone's charging port (microUSB or lightning).
It features a FreeCapture mode, that lets you shoot first and point later. The feature leverages the connected phone's on-board gyroscope, and lets users to preview the original 360 scene using the phone's display as a view finder. Whatever the users see as they point the phone into the original experience is what they'll capture in a fixed-frame video. For a more unique shot, the FreeCapture mode also offers effects like tiny planet and rabbit hole.
There's a SmartTrack feature that lets users capture a 1080p fixed-frame video where the subject of their choice is always centered. This means users can first capture everything, and then the camera give the recording a ready-to-share, classic-sized video that keeps the spotlight on the key subject.
The camera also has on-board gyroscope sensor for six-axis image stabilization, ensuring that it records smooth video without sacrificing quality even in rough-and-tumble situations. It offers HDR shooting mode and supports taking photos in RAW format and videos in Log format.
Using a selfie stick or string attachment, creators can capture up to 120fps interpolated in software to 240fps slow-motion shots. As for the action shots, the camera circles the users always keeping them center-frame, while the accessory used to spin the camera is concealed.
Apart from selfie stick, users can also mount the camera on helmets, drones, cars, tripods and a wide-range of tools and accessories. It can be attached using the standard 1/4-inch 20 thread pitch screws. Insta360 is also selling a IP68 waterproof housing, that can withstand up to 30 meter depths, making it ideal for filming watersports and underwater scenes.
The Insta 360 One (including a two-in-one case and camera stand, a MicroSD card, a Micro-USB cable, a lens cloth, and a string attachment to achieve the bullet-time effect) has been priced at $299.99, and is now available for pre-order in the U.S via company website, Amazon and B&H.
