Airtel's VoLTE services to go live next week

Reliance Jio started India's first 4G VoLTE (Voice over LTE) network, and now one year later Airtel is following suit by launching its own VoLTE services.

According to a report from Economic Times (ET), Airtel will launch its VoLTE services in the country as early as next week. VoLTE services will go live initially in Mumbai, followed by Kolkata, and other metro cities. Once activated, users will get a message to activate VoLTE services on their phone.

It further says that Airtel has been testing VoLTE services in other major cities as well, and is planning to cover the entire country by March 2018.

Currently Airtel, and every other telecom operator (except Reliance Jio) in the country offer services on the out-dated circuit-switch technology, with data being offered on 4G network, and voice on 3G or 2G network. The VoLTE technology has the benefits of offering HD calls with more voice clarity, and faster data connection on the same network alongside being more battery efficient.

The report also states that Airtel has tested its VoLTE services on 15 different smartphone models, and is planning to push software patches to make 4G LTE supported smartphones compatible with VoLTE services.

Apart Airtel, Idea Cellular and Vodafone are expected to launch their VoLTE services in the country soon.
