BlackBerry Won't Be Upgrading The Priv To Nougat, Oreo Update Confirmed For KEYone
The Priv was the first Android flagship device from BlackBerry and the last device they built in-house. The Priv was launched in November 2015 with Lollipop 5.1.1 out of the box and was later on upgraded to Marshmallow in April 2016. It's been more than a year since Google released Nougat (in fact Android's next iteration - Oreo - is out) and now BlackBerry has finally confirmed that the Priv won't be receiving the Nougat upgrade.
The confirmation came from BlackBerry's General Manager of Mobility Solutions Alex Thurber. Thurber, speaking on the 100th episode of UTB Blogcast, said that the Priv won't be updated to Nougat because getting all the requisite partners together for the Nougat update would be next to impossible. Although Thurber didn't speak about the Nougat update for the DTEK devices, the update seems unlikely.
The confirmation shouldn't be a shocker since the Priv wasn't much of a success and continuing major software updates for a not-so-popular device seemed unlikely. On a positive side, the Priv will continue to receive security updates from BlackBerry.
Thurber also confirmed that the KEYone will be updated to Oreo in the near future. If you are planning to resort to custom ROMs, I'm sorry to tell you that no custom ROMs are available currently for the Priv and the KEYone.
