Motorola Lists Devices Which Will Be Updated To Oreo
Motorola has released a list of devices which will be getting the Oreo 8.0 update. There are ten devices in all which includes various models of the Moto G and Moto Z series. The list of devices include:
Moto Z
Moto Z Droid
Moto Z Force Droid
Moto Z2 Force
Moto Z Play
Moto Z2 Play
Moto G5
Moto G5 Plus
Moto G5S
Moto G5S Plus
Disappointingly, the Moto G4 and G4 Plus have been left out. It's worth noting here that these devices were promised an Oreo upgrade when they were launched in 2016. The Moto G3 had been left the same way after it was updated to Marshmallow from Lollipop. Even the Moto G (2013) and Moto G (2014) got two major Android updates.
Motorola assured G4 users of an Oreo upgrade, but is now backing out
This isn't the first time Motorola is ditching a device. Last year the Moto E3 Power was denied an update to Nougat and the E3 Power was launched with Marshmallow onboard. Its not just Motorola, OnePlus recently ditched the OnePlus 2 for the Nougat update it was assured of. On a positive note, developers at XDA forums are working on bringing up Oreo 8.0 for the Moto G4 series. If you wish to update your device to Oreo 8.0, you will have to do so manually using a custom ROM. The Oreo based ROM build linked above currently has a couple of bugs which are expected to get ironed out as time progresses. I will advise you to wait for a couple of months and then install an Oreo based ROM. All you have to do is unlock the bootloader, put on a custom recovery and flash the ROM using the recovery.
Motorola hasn't specified any timeline for the update rollout, but we expect the company to follow last year's trends and start updating its devices before the end of the year.
