Twitter testing lite version of its Android mobile app
Back in April, Twitter launched Twitter Lite mobile site designed for emerging markets including India. Now the popular micro-blogging platform is testing a lite version of its Android app that will help you save mobile data.
The lite version of Twitter app is currently being tested in Philippines, and just like other lite apps is designed to work in countries with limited internet connectivity and with smartphones with low-end hardware. It supports 2G/3G networks, English/Filipino languages and is compatible with Android devices running Lollipop and up.
"The Philippines market has slow mobile networks and expensive data plans while mobile devices with limited storage are still very popular there. Twitter Lite helps to overcome these barriers to usage for Twitter in the Philippines." said a Twitter spokesperson.
Twitter Lite has a very small download size of 3MB, compared to the regular 13MB size, and will consume 70 percent less data. Even though the app has "lite" moniker it still has all the basic functions of the regular Twitter app like breaking news, sports scores and entertainment update. It also offer timeline view, Notifications, explore tab, messages, polls and profile customization. However you get the option to disable all images and video loading using the data saver function.
Twitter users in Philippines can download the Lite version from the Google Play Store. Others can also try out the app by downloading the apk file from APKMirror and side-loading it to your device.
This is not the first time a social media platform is launching a lite version of its app. FaceBook (& FB Messenger), Linkedin, Skype, YouTube have a lite version of their app, to work on slower internet connection. Tech giant Google is also said to be working on a lite version of its Search app.
