Xiaomi Will (Supposedly) Launch An Android One Device In India On September 5
Xiaomi has been teasing about a new phone with a flagship level dual camera setup. The tease started with Xiaomi's Vice President Manu Kumar Jain tweeting early last month that Xiaomi will be launching "it's first dual-camera phone in India" next month. Back then we speculated the device to be either the Mi 6 or Mi 5X. Xiaomi later on confirmed that the dual-camera smartphone will be launched in India on September 5.

Xiaomi's latest tweet in regard to the event on September 5 has ruled out the launch of Mi 5X or Mi 6. The video's opening frame states "Introducing a new series by Xiaomi." We know that Xiaomi has been working with Google on an Android One device rumored as Mi A1. The "new series" is likely to be Xiaomi's venture into Android One devices.
Xiaomi is known for it's low- and mid-range smartphones which offer excellent hardware. Google's Android One program aims to deliver low-cost Android smartphones to first time smartphone buyers in emerging markets. Owing to Xiaomi's prominence in India and the aim of Google's Android One program, Xiaomi seems to be Google's ideal partner for launching the next wave of Android One phones in India. The first generation of Android One handsets were introduced by Google in India in 2014 in partnership with Spice, Karbonn and Micromax. Google followed it up with another Android One smartphone - the Lava Pixel V1 - in 2015. Unfortunately, none of the Android One smartphones were able to take off and all of them sold poorly. The Mi A1 may be the game-changer.
