Niantic is developing AR based Harry Potter game
Niantic, the developer behind last year's highly successful AR-based Pokemon Go, has announced that it is working on its next AR gaming title that will bring the magical universe of Harry Potter to life.
The game is called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, and Niantic Lab will develop the game in collaboration with Portkey Games and Warner Bros.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will allow gamers to experience being real-life wizards. In the game players will be able to learn spells, explore their real-world neighborhoods and cities to discover and fight legendary beasts. Players will also be able to team up with other to take down power enemies. Other details are still scarce.
According to TechCrunch, the AR based Harry Potter game is likely to leverage the platform of Niantic's first AR game Ingress. It was launched five years ago and allowed players to roam the real world collecting power-ups, defending locations and exploring their environment. The gameplay mechanics of Ingress would work well with Harry Potter universe.
Also Harry Potter game will benefit from location database built up by Ingress, which was later used in Pokemon GO to enable real-world locations into the in-game experience.
Like Pokemon, Harry Potter also have a cult following, so there is no doubt, the game will be a massive success just like Pokemon Go.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be launched some time in 2018. You can sign up here for the game to get updates.
