OnePlus Releases Kernel Source & Device Tree For OnePlus 5T
OnePlus has always supported community driven development on its Android devices. Starting from the OnePlus 3 in 2016, the Shehzen based company has released the kernel sources and device trees for its devices on the launch day itself. OnePlus has followed suit with the recent release of the OnePlus 5T.
The kernel source and device tree of the 5T are now available on the GitHub repositories of OnePlus. Kernel source codes help developers in building custom ROMs, custom recoveries (like TWRP) and custom kernels.
All the device manufacturers are legally obligated to share the kernel sources of their Android devices. This is because Android is based off Linux kernel which is licensed under GPL. The terms of the General Public License (GPL) demand a device manufacturer to share the modifications they make to the Linux kernel. We have seen cases wherein OEMs take several months to release the kernel source codes and seeing OnePlus' approach of "Zero Day sources" (making kernel source codes available on the same day as the phone's launch), we hope other OEMs take a leaf out of OnePlus' book.
