Pixel 2 XL Goes Under JerryRigEverything's Hammer, Fares Better Than The Pixel 2
When JerryRigEverything put the Pixel 2 under his tests last month, the phone didn't do well. The Pixel 2's hybrid paint coating could not resist any scuffs at all, leaving permanent marks on the phone. The bend test almost split the Pixel 2 into two halves and when the fingerprint scanner was scratched heavily, it failed to recognize registered fingerprints. While the Pixel 2 is manufactured by HTC, the Pixel 2 XL has been made by LG. JerryRigEverything got his hands on a Pixel 2 XL and put it through his tests.
In the scratch test, the Pixel 2 XL's OLED panel started getting scratched by Mohs level six pick, which is in par with other flagship smartphones like the iPhone X, LG V30 and the Galaxy Note 8. Like the Pixel 2, the metal body of the Pixel 2 XL is covered by a paint coating. The hybrid coating isn't resistant to scratches at all. JerryRigEverything noted that marks from keys and coins left a permanent impression on the 2 XL. The place where the Pixel 2 XL differed from it's younger sibling was the fingerprint scanner. As mentioned earlier, the fingerprint scanner on the Pixel 2 failed to recognize enrolled fingerprints after it was scratched heavily. In case of the Pixel 2 XL though the fingerprint scanner continued to work even after heavy scratching.
The Pixel 2 XL's screen lasted ten seconds under the flame test after which the pixels completely turned white and didn't recover. In the bend test, the Pixel 2 XL flexed marginally but stood its ground.
